Waiting For HELB Loans
helb loans delays - Loans from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) have been delayed for first year university students across Kenya.
The delay comes after the National Treasury failed to release KSh four billion to HELB. This means that 62,000 students who joined Kenyan universities in September of 2015 will now be caught waiting for the funds to be released to them.
Perhaps most troubling, Ringera claims that if the national government releases only KSh 2.5 billion as they claim that they will, only 34,000 of the new students will stand to benefit from the government student loans programme.
Now HELB is hoping to collect at least KSh 3.6 billion in funding by the end of 2016 from former beneficiaries of the HELB loan program.
Former beneficiaries of the HELB loans who are now struggling to find jobs have been hard hit in recent months.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Tuesday, October 27, declined to approve a Bill that could have seen jobless HELB beneficiaries exempted from the KSh 5,000 monthly penalty
