EXERCISE KENYAN VENTURER - ARMY CADET EXPEDITION TO KENYA INITIAL WARNING ORDER AND APPLICATION FORMS FOR CADETS
1.    Introduction.  It has been decided to hold a biennial Army Cadet Expedition run centrally by the Cadet AT Adviser and sponsored by HQ Sp Comd.  The aim is to offer a challenging and demanding experience for cadets, who would not ordinarily have the opportunity to take part in an overseas expedition of this nature.  The 2014 Expedition will take place in Kenya from 13 Jul to 18 Aug 14.  The Expedition will be divided into two groups, each consisting of 20 cadets and 8 CFAVs, which must be capable of operating separately.  The groups will overlap for one week in Kenya and the group dates are at Para 4.  There will be a selection and training package, as laid down in Para 3; cadets will be required to show considerable commitment and determination and high standard of personal fitness will be expected on arrival at Halton on Fri 24 Jun 13.  Only the most reliable and committed cadets should be put forward for selection.
2.    Objective.  The objective of this letter is to seek nominations for cadet volunteers to take part in the 2014 Army Cadet Expedition to Kenya.  A separate letter will be issued asking for CFAV leaders.
- shortlisted cadets 2016 3.    Outline Selection and Training Plan.  The selection and training plan is as follows:
a.    24 – 26 May 13.  Initial selection weekend at Halton.  Sixty cadets will be called forward; 40 cadets will be selected for the Expedition with 10 nominated as reserves.
b.    18 - 23 Oct 13.  Confirmatory training course at Halton.  Successful completion of this course will earn a Summer Mountain Proficiency (SMP) qualification.
c.    12 - 17 Apr 14.  Final training event at Halton.
4.    Groups.  There will be 2 groups each of 20 cadets and 8 CFAVs deploying as follows:
a.    Group 1.  Sun 13 Jul to Mon 4 Aug 14.
b.    Group 2.  Sun 27 Jul to Mon 18 Aug 14.

5.    Outline Expedition Plan.  The precise dates will be subject to airline timetables and the exact programme may need to be amended depending upon local mountain conditions.  Each group will meet for a pre-deployment package at the Surrey ACF Cadet Training Centre, Godalming and will disperse from Heathrow Airport at the end of the expedition.  The proposed outline expedition plan is at Annex A.
6.    Outline Administrative Plan.  The outline administrative plan is:
a.    On receipt.  Dist/Bdes are to disseminate this letter to their cadet units; SO2 WESTMINSTER is to put the letter on WESTMINSTER.
b.    By Fri 15 Feb 13.  Applications to be submitted to HQ LONDIST and Regional Bdes.
c.    By Fri 1 Mar 13.  HQ LONDIST and UK Regional Bdes are to submit nominations to HQ Sp Comd, in priority order, for up to 7 cadets per Dist/Bde.
Note.  All Dist/Bde bids are to reflect a fair mix of genders and experience with a balance between ACF and CCF(A).
d.    By Fri 15 Mar 13.  HQ Sp Comd is to promulgate a short list of 60 cadets selected for the selection weekend 24 – 26 May 13.
e.    By 12 Apr 13.  HQ Sp Comd is to publish preliminary instructions for the selection session during the period 24 – 26 May 13 which is to run by the Cadet AT Advisor at Halton.
7.    Cadet nominations.
a.    All ACF and CCF(A) cadet nominations are to be submitted to Cadets Branch HQ Sp Comd using the pro forma at Annex B by Fri 1 Mar 13.
- cadet shortlisted candidates 2016b.    Nominees are to be interviewed either at Brigade, County or Contingent level; cadets must be fit, self motivated and committed.  This HQ will not accept any cadet’s application that does not confirm that a formal interview has taken place.
c.    Each cadet nominated is to produce a statement on one side of A4 paper describing why he or she wants to participate in the expedition and how it may benefit them in the future.  No application will be accepted without this statement.
d.    All nominations must be approved and prioritised at Dist/Bde; nominations direct from cadet units or CCF contingents to HQ Sp Comd will NOT be accepted and will be returned.  Cadets Branch HQ Sp Comd will respect the individual formation HQ order of priority.
e.    Candidates must be aged 16 or above on the day of departure.
f.    All cadets will require a passport that is valid until at least 1 Mar 15.
- kdf cadets shortlisted 2016 8.    Medical.
a.    Disclosure.  Full and honest disclosure of any medical or dental conditions is required in the application forms for all cadets.  It is essential to observe the medical constraints especially those concerning allergies and asthma, which are exaggerated by altitude.
b.    Inoculations.  All those taking part in the expedition will be required to be inoculated and have proof of inoculation prior to departure.  Failure to do so will result in the place on the expedition being withdrawn.  The inoculations and anti malarial drugs are to be obtained at personal expense with advice from the family GP.  Further guidance and advice on the inoculations required is at Annex C.
9.    Cost.  Cadets taking part in the expedition will be expected to contribute £1000 towards the expedition.
10.    Conclusion.  This is an outstanding opportunity for a group of young people to enjoy the opportunity of a lifetime and is very much part of the “cadet experience”.
